Location: RAAF Base Amberley, QLD
Size: 25m x 25m ptdome

The Royal Australian Air Force's RAAF Base Amberley is Australia's largest base, employing over 3,500 people.  It is located about 50km from Brisbane and is home to large number of units including No. 1 Squadron (F/A-18F Super Hornet Fighter) and No. 36 Squadron (C-17 Globemaster heavy transport aircraft).

Sitting proudly at the Base entrance and acting as 'guardian of the gate' is the first Canberra Bomber manufactured in Australia in 1953 (A84-201).  The aircraft has been recently restored and repainted, and to protect it from the harsh sun and intense rain typical of the area a cover was deemed necessary by the Base.

In order to maintain architectural continuity between the Base entrance and the highly visible s² designed Boeing airspace, and to counter a number of challenges the Canberra Bomber site presented, a ptdome solution was chosen by Department of Defence.

Assembled on temporary stands carefully placed within a maze of memorial plaques and stone monuments, the PVC fabric clad 25m x 25m ptdome was erected and lifted onto columns up to 4.8m tall with four Franna cranes.

Taller columns at the front of the ptdome allowing for the slope of the site draws visitors eyes into the space, and creates a dramatic statement combining the then revolutionary technology of the Canberra Bomber and the ptdome solution protecting it today.
